Ganoderma applanatum (Artist's Conk)

Shelf fungus parasitizing the heartwood of a large conifer.

The Artist's Conk gets it's name from the ability to creatively imprint the white pores on the bottom with a sharp object. The brown imprints may last indefinitely.

This fungus was found in a tree cavity in front of Denny Hall.
There are several Artist Conk mushrooms on campus, mostly in the parasitic form as the grounds crew does not generally leave stumps and dead trees around.  One great place to see some nice sized saprophytic Ganoderma applanatums in the campus area is at coordinates 47.657362,-122.292399 in the Union Bay Natural Area.
