Trametes versicolor (Turkey Tail)

This fungus looks like a turkey tail!  It is a white-rot fungus that is incredibly adept at eating away at the bark of trees in order to gain access to the nutrients inside. The particular fallen conifer it was growing on also had at least four other species of fungus living on it. These particular specimens were found off of the trail at the Union Bay Natural Area.

The Trametes versicolor has a porous appearance underneath the colored top. This distinguishes it from other similar bracket fungi.
