There are thousands of fungi on campus due to its diversity from forming myccorhizal relationships with thousands of species of plants. It's difficult to know just how many there are at a single time, but there are around 500 species present in Spring and over 1000 present in Autumn, some fungi present for the entire year.
There are many different places to spot fungi around the University of Washington campus. On campus, one can easily find mushrooms in wood chips, logs, stumps, inside tree crevices, and in wet grassy areas.
In Union Bay Natural Area (UBNA), one may find many mushrooms along the trail, in wet grasses, underneath trees, on fallen trees, or on any other woody surface. There are many myccorhizal relationships forming in this area, an indication that it is returning to its natural ecological state.
Most fungi can be seen after rain, in the morning. The sun and heat can cause mushroom caps to crack and lighten.
