Laccaria laccata (Deceiver)


These myccorhizal fungus was found underneath Quaking Aspen. In a disturbed area, this primary succession fungus indicates that the area is returning to it's naturally productive state.

These have white spores and are quite variable in appearance, nicknamed the "deceiver" for this reason. They can be quite orange when young, as shown, or stark white and concave once full maturity is reached. The caps of these particular mushroom were about 4 cm in length. They were found off of a trail at the Union Bay Natural Area.
